Invisible Web: A term that refers to the vast amount of information on the web that isn’t indexed by search engines. Coined in 1994 by Dr. Jill Ellsworth. There are numerous reasons for why a web page might not have been indexed. These reasons include the presence of a no follow tag inside the robots.txt file or meta tag and an orphaned web page.

The invisible web concept is very similar to an iceberg. Most people only see the tip or part of the iceberg that is above the water. However, the majority of the iceberg is below the surface and is invisible. The tip of the iceberg represents the visible web while the submerged iceberg represents the invisible web.
